A migraine is considered to be a very dangerous neurological disorder in some people. These migraines range in levels, which can range from a simple annoyance to a life threatening condition. Migraines are also unilateral headaches in which they occur only on one side of the head at any given time. They are most commonly associated with a pulsating pain, which is caused by the heart’s pulse. Furthermore a migraine is not just an infliction of the head but is also accompanied with nausea and sensitivity to light.
One of the most peculiar parts of the migraine is that it has been most commonly noted to be preceded by an aura which basically tells the person that they are about to have a migraine. In some cases this aura gives the person substantial time as to allow them to take medication for the pain before it even starts. This aura may be as simple as a smell that the sufferer smells just before the headache starts even though there is nothing around from which the smell can emanate. There is also the possibility that, instead of a smell, you can see a blinding light prior to having an episode. Basically, this aura precedes the migraine and a large percentage of migraine sufferers have stated some type of signal like this preceding the onset of a migraine episode.
There are so many inconsistencies associated with a migraine that it is hard to figure the actual cause. Furthermore, studies have shown that migraines may also be a genetic issue in which it can be passed on from parent to child. The symptoms themselves can also vary. Some migraine sufferers can have a migraine episode with no pain at all while still suffering from the nausea and sensitivity to light while others can have such a severe amount of pain that it leaves them incapacitated for a period of time until the migraine passes.
All these inconsistencies make it hard for the treatment of migraines. Furthermore, one medication may work to remedy a migraine one day and the next it may make it worse. This leads to a person not having many choices when it comes to medications to ease the migraine pains since nothing has been determined to be successful every time with any one sufferer.
A migraine can last as little as a couple of minutes or as long as three days, it all depends on the individual person and the migraine episode. People who suffer from migraines suffer from them in a chronic fashion, which has dictated the headache as a secondary headache, meaning that it has an underlying cause. Unfortunately this cause can vary depending on each individual person.
While it is possible for a person to suffer from one migraine and then never have one again, the most common migraine sufferer will have consistent and chronic migraines, which occur on a daily or weekly basis.
